During the first weekend of June, we will be attending the 8th Annual Hendrickson Hatch Fly Fishing Tournament in Malone, New York.

Watch our page on Facebook for pictures!

Anglers are invited to come to Malone, June 2 and 3, 2012, to fish one of the North Country’s most productive streams, the Great Salmon River.

Flowing north through Franklin County, the Salmon River drains the foothills of the Adirondacks and winds its way through the town and village of Malone before dumping into the St. Lawrence River.

As of May 8, 2012 the outlook is for good fly fishing on the Salmon River over the next month. Water temperatures are currently in the low 50s and dry flies are starting to emerge. This past weekend some Hendrickson mayflies about size 12 and some golden/yellow stone flies about size 10 have been observed.

Water levels are pretty high, but by this coming weekend, water levels should be pretty good. The DEC has stocked the river at least twice, including two-year-old brown trout yesterday.

Fly fishing will take place on the Salmon River between the Chasm Falls Dam and State Route 37 in Westville, NY. A map of the Salmon River will be given to each participant for a reference. Access to the river must be public and legal and respect all posted and private property. Fishing licenses are required for ages 16 and up.

Hendrickson Hatch Tournament Registration

Registration will take place at North Country Community College between 8:00 and 9:45 am on Saturday morning.

The registration fee is $35;

children 12 and under, $15.

The fee includes miscellaneous gifts at registration, an invitation to Saturday evening’s reception at Donovan’s Restaurant, and a ribs and chicken BBQ on Sunday afternoon. Registered anglers will also be entered into a drawing for miscellaneous door prizes on Sunday afternoon.

Family members are invited to the BBQ for $10. Kids eat free!

All fly fishing tournament proceeds go to the Malone Revitalization Foundation for continued enhancement of the Salmon River.

Plaques will be awarded to the top 3 winning anglers based on the total number of inches accumulated. A plaque will also be awarded to the angler with the largest trout landed and released.

Will we see you there? SEND US A TWEET! The tournament web site is http://www.hendricksonhatch.org/.

Limited to 2 more anglers to enjoy dorado fishing at the height of the season at the Dorado Lodge. On arrival we will relax after the over-night flight and enjoy beautiful Buenos Aires. The following day a flight to Salta will allow us an afternoon and evening to enjoy this colonial town in the northern (and wine) part of Argentina. The serious fishing begins on Thursday and continues daily until Wednesday, May 30, when we depart Salta and continue with our return flight(s) home, arriving the following morning. You should call now if you are interested so we can make proper arrangement.

Salta Province in NW Argentina is the only place on earth where you can consistently catch large freshwater dorado (Salminus maxilosus) on small, clear streams.

From the Lodge you have access to the Juramento River. This fantastic river was tamed after the building of a hydroelectric dam in 1973. Dorado migrated from the Parana River basin and created what is the only clear tailwater river with “L” size Dorado (up to 40 lbs). The Juramento averages 100 feet wide, but you rarely cast longer than 50 feet.
The average Dorado is 8 to 10 pounds and during your stay you may hook fish well over 20 pounds. The lodge record Dorado to the boat on a fly is 37 pounds.

The new Dorado Lodge is located on a 20,000-acre private ranch with exclusive access to the best section of Rio Tucanes, adjacent to the border of a National Park, and is a great sanctuary for wildlife, including the fabled Golden Dorado.

The private stretch of river is 19 km long and only 30’ to 60’ wide. It is protected within a jungle (yunga) canyon and there is little or no wind, making it very easy to fly fish.

Call us now for more information and to confirm a place on this “Travel Adventure”. Our toll free number is 1.877.874.1400.

The Royal Wulff Ambush Triangle Taper fly line has received a 2012 Kudo award from Fly Rod & Reel. Because of the thin running line and weighty head that exaggerate the rod bend and line tug, the line has been very popular among casting instructors. For the same reason, the line has developed a following of switch, Scandi, and Skagit users. The line is offered in 4-14 weight sizes and also with a clear head for stealthy fishing.

The Travel A Store has these lines available, give us a call toll-free at 877.874.1400.

Life on the road is difficult with packed planes, rising prices, rental cars, and a schedule that makes even the most chipper travelers wince in pain. But, you may be able to ease the strain of constantly being on the road using a few of these tips.

Get Status Where It Matters. As a business traveler you may be eligible for “elite” status in airline frequent-flyer programs and elite status in a hotel frequent-guest program sponsored by one of the major hotel families. Although benefits vary by chain, elite lodging status will almost always get you expedited check-in and checkout; early check-in and checkout; room upgrades; and sometimes free in-room Internet access and breakfast. You can even score elite status when you don’t stay frequently at a particular chain. And it goes without saying that you should concentrate your hotel stays with as few hotel brand families as possible. That maximizes your chance of becoming elite.

More tips to follow!

Wading large fast rivers can be difficult and even dangerous so it is wise to use a wading staff. However, here is a trick that helps if I don’t have my wading staff. When wading across a big river ones balance becomes very critical. In order to help steady yourself hold your fly rod by the grip in your downstream hand. With that arm fully extended point the fly rod straight downstream with just the tip of the rod resting on the surface of the river. As you wade across the stream just keep the rod tip delicately touching on the stream surface. You will be amazed how this helps your balance.
